The Frightened Forest

The Frightened Forest

What is Personification?

Quick answer: giving a personality to an object or thing!

For example: you might want to write about something which happens in a deep, dark cave. One of the first things you do is describe the cave. If you say: "The rocks in the cave were green with moss", the reader or listener does get some kind of idea of the scene. If you say "The angry rocks were clothed in a green mossy overcoat" the picture you are painting becomes more lively and interesting.

Of course we know that rocks CANNOT really be "angry" (or for that matter wear overcoats of whatever colour!) but sometimes they can seem so, just as they can seem calm and peaceful (on a sunny day at Portland Bill for example, but go there in a howling gale and the rocks become angry and dangerous).

Make your way through this tale and notice the personification I have used (I have also used "alliteration" - remember that one? - to make the point more clear for you all). When you have reached the end of the adventure you can have a go yourselves!
